Systems Engineering

Mr. Salmon worked for 12 years as a systems engineer at defense companies ESL, a subsidiary of TRW, later to become a part of Northrop Grumman, and GTE Government Systems. He performed in various roles such as staff engineer, systems engineer, section head and technical director, mostly involved with large reconnaissance systems involving both airborne and ground components. He also led the Engineering Automation Group at TRW for a two-year period, focusing on tools for requirements analysis and behavioral analysis using thread modeling.

With respect to commercial systems, Mr. Salmon has led engineering teams in the development of electro-mechanical systems such as printers, motors, and generators. Mr. Salmon feels that many commercial product developments can benefit from agile teams including resident system engineers plus multiple consultants and suppliers; these teams can be particularly cost-effective. Mr. Salmon can put these teams together quickly using his network of connections, especially IEEE CNSV.

  • Development of system architectures: hardware and software
  • Writing of proposals and specifications, including SBIR
  • Addressing program crises using “tiger teams”

Systems Engineering in Electronic Packaging

In the area of electronic packaging, Mr. Salmon has championed a systems solution covering all of the disciplines; these include high-density structural considerations, assembly, testing, and cooling. He has also promoted standardization of thermal, electrical, and mechanical parameters in a system environment, which can lead to improved opportunities for developing interoperable systems.
