Recent Project Examples
- Leading a group of high-powered consultants developing a new terahertz scanning system for airport security. The device profiles the heads of subjects using terahertz or millimeter-waves. It can see through hair, fabrics, and disguises. It employs integrated planar solutions on the detector side. It is designed to identify a single individual out of a population of 200 million at the rate of one per second, or 3,000 per hour, or 18 million per year. The cost per passenger enplanement is estimated at 33 cents.
- Performed tear-down of LCD displays produced by foreign manufacturers to check for patent infringement of a US patent holder. The displays included cell phone, industrial display, computer monitor, and large TV monitor. Over 100 patents were analyzed and claim charts were developed for each.
- Developing for a major US aerospace manufacturer a new packaging method for a high-power IGBT* module rated at 900A peak forward current. The method applies buckled pillar concepts developed in a recent patent application by Peter Salmon, "Columnar Connector and Assembly Method".
* Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor - As principle investigator on an SBIR* program, developed a new concept for a compact and powerful hand drill to be used in the manufacture of the Joint Strike Fighter Plane at Lockheed Martin. A revolutionary electrostatic drill motor was proposed.
* Small Business Innovation Research - Developing a proof-of-concept device for a solar cell installer/maintainer company. The device provides automated electrostatic cleaning of solar cell surfaces in a laminated film that can be applied to new or existing solar installations. It is described in a recent patent application by Peter Salmon, "Surface Cleaning Apparatus and Method".
